URBANDALE RECREATION

The Urbandale Parks and Recreation Department consists of a Parks Division and a Recreation and Community Education Division. The Parks Division maintains and manages over 850 acres of parkland, 33 miles of trails, seven shelter houses, 12 tennis courts, six ball diamonds, ten soccer fields, a skateboard park, a skating pond, and a sledding hill.

The Recreation and Community Education Division develops and manages the swimming pool programs, classes and programs for all ages, seasonal programs, and educational programs.

Urbandale boasts an extensive trail system with more than 16 miles of maintained trails. The City also maintains 12 tennis courts as well. Tennis courts are available at South Karen Acres Park, Walker Johnston Park, and Lions Park. All courts are open to the public FREE of charge except at times when there are classes and competitions.

Kids and adults can enjoy the city's pool or the three wading pools. The Urbandale Swimming Pool is located at 7201 Aurora Avenue. Urbandale's three wading pools are located at Lions Park and South Karen Acres for children six years of age and younger. The Aquatic Playground next to the pool is for children 10 years of age and younger.

In the winter residents enjoy outdoor activities such a sledding and ice skating. One of Urbandale's most unique parks is the sledding hill just west of the Metro Ice Sports Facility at 5100 NW 72nd Street. The hill is opened when there is a four-inch snow base (a sign will be posted). A warming room with a fireplace and concessions are available in the Ice Facility where tube rentals are also available. The ice skating pond is located at Lakeview Park (80th Street and Aurora Ave.). The pond may be used for ice skating when ice conditions are adequate. Signs are posted indicating whether the ice is thick enough for skating.
